So, upon arrival, I noticed Javits was already there playing casuals and I see that they're playing on 60 inch HDTVs. I already knew this was gonna affect a lot of my combo timings since HDTVs are the devil for the most part with their lagging ways. Javits notices that one of the TVs was acting a little funky in terms of the lag. I noticed for the most part when I was playing my tournament match against a Sagat player and I picked Bison just to run through him quick. Bison has no kara throw at all and he needs tricks to win. So I setup c.short x3 scissors FADC throw and when I hit the dash I pressed throw and nothing came out at all. Bison just stood there and did nothing. Apparently, the TVs weren't even on game mode(which supposedly reduces lag). I already knew something was up and that this wasn't gonna be a good tourney at all considering the equipment they're using already.
Triforce was explaining to me the brackets they use to run their SF4 tournaments and they use some whacked out Yu-Gi-Oh bracket. The controversy behind those brackets is that when it's an uneven bracket(31 man and not 32, for example), the loser of the final match in the bracket still remains in winners and has to face someone else to advance. Sounds confusing, but also retarded at the same time. Standard brackets are run out of Tournamentmaker(if I remember correctly). It's a software that is free to download and makes a bracket in like, 2 minutes. NOT that hard to use. I'll just let that one sink in for you and move onto the next negative that I ran into.
The venue is as about as big as what they want to do stuff with: Yu-Gi-Oh tournies. Apparently from what I was told, the second floor of the venue is much bigger, but they were holding a Yu-Gi-Oh tourney on the same day. I would have much preffered the upstairs be used since there was a fairly good looking turnout and the corner we were designated to play in was very much cramped for the most part. I've been some small venues before, but I could at least move around freely and not have to shove my way through chairs and humans.
On top of that, there was supposed to be a live stream done for this tournament. So, the owners give Heart of Battle their spot to run their stream. That's great and all, but you're running a stream by the entrance. And people realize that hype matches are usually ran on the livestreams for entertainment purposes and for people to see their favorite players go at it. Makes sense. Well, when the time came to see said hype matches, the owners told us to not block the path to the entrance. That's respectable and all, but you chose that spot in the venue to let them setup and run the stream from there. Your venue isn't exactly a convention center here. The stream was later canceled for that very reason, so people only managed to watch maybe, 3 matches tops on the stream. Good job, guys.
Now we go into my biggest gripe of the night: Stopping a tourney mid-way for a money match. Now, I understand Rico Suave is good and he's all the rage these days. I respect it. But, in no way, shape, or form, should you be interrupting a tournament to run a money match. Want to know why? Because it took 6 hours to run a 32 man bracket. Tournament started at 4 and didn't end till about 10:30 p.m. that evening. It ran so long that the Tekken 6 tourney they were supposed to hold wasn't even held at all.
I've been to a lot of majors and locals. I've YET to say anything negative about a tournament that I've been to. This was my first horrible experience in regards to tournaments. It's really bad when you only play two matches in winners in the span of 3 hours. At that point, you don't even feel like playing anymore and just want to go home.
All in all, I think it'd be best for King's Games to never deal with the fighting game community ever again if this is how they're going to keep running their tournaments. You charge a venue fee as well and you can't even deliver on the venue? Stick to Yu-Gi-Oh, guys.
